Beginning in the mid 1950's, regional railway compartment coaches were retrofitted to make a new passenger car series for the Deutsche Bahn. These were called Umbauwagen (rebuilt cars). There were second class cars, first and second class cars and second class cars with luggage compartments.
These cars were indispensable for travel on main and secondary railway lines for many years. The last of these were phased out in the mid 1980's. A few have survived on museum railways or in track maintenance trains.
