The streamlined and diesel powered VT 11.5 trainset was a standout development from the ranks of the German railway vehicle builders in the 1950s. It was the flagship of the Deutsche Bundesbahn. In the DB's new numbering scheme introduced on January 1st 1968 the power cars were assigned BR 601 and the trailers BR901. They were developed for international Trans Europe Express (TEE) service, with increased comfort in mind. When in 1971 the DB introduced the InterCity system - first class trains offering fast service on two-hour intervals between major German cities - the TEE trains were integrated into this system. To achieve 160 kph speeds while accommodating up to 256 seats in 10-unit trainsets, four of the power cars were rebuilt with 2200hp gas-turbine engines. They were renumbered BR602. Scheduled operation lasted until 1988.
Starting in 1987 all trainsets (exept 601 002 and 901 403, which had been damaged and scrappd) were sold to Italy. In 1990 a single 10-unit train was leased back from Italy by the East German DR. It was used briefly, from July 27 to September 29 as the InterCity train Max Liebermann between Hamburg and Berlin.
This PIKO three-unit trainset consists of two powered end unkts and a compartment-style coach. The powered end units are equipped with hard-chrome plated wheels and ball bearings on all driven axles. The trainset has operating red/white directional lights. Interior lighting, a digital/DCC decoder and sound can be added. Additionally a compartment-style coach with a different road number and a buffet car are available.
